REMEMBRANCE OF THE DALEKS
by Ben Aaronovitch
PART FOUR
Rachel comes into the classroom with a teletext report to let the Doctor,
Ace, Allison, and Gilmore know that it reports a radar contact.
The Doctor asks if its on a re-entry curve from low orbit, and Rachel
says yes. The Doctor says it's the Imperial Dalek shuttlecraft.
Gilmore worries that they might land the ship here at the school, but
the Doctor says they won't because this place is much too far from the
main action. A roar from outside prompts Rachel to sarcastically ask,
"You're sure?" and Ace spots a descending dull orange Dalek shuttle
coming in for a landing in the playground outside. The Doctor yells
for her to get away from the window. Ace runs across the tables to
the others and all five of them get down behind a table as the exhaust
blast blows in the windows and shatters the glassware equipment all
across the room.
The Dalek shuttle lowers itself exactly onto the site where it landed
previously, on top of the charred bits of pavement Ace and the Doctor observed
earlier. The shuttle seems constructed of concentric hexahedrons,
one of which opens in its middle, and a squad of Imperial Daleks glides
out, scanning the yard with their eyestalks. Their leader orders them
to seize the Hand of Omega, and orders them to a set of co-ordinates.
Upstairs in the lab, Gilmore orders everyone downstairs while he and
the Doctor look down at the parked shuttle out the now-shattered window.
Gilmore asks if that's the mother ship, and the Doctor says that's just
a shuttle, that the mother ship is much larger. The Doctor asks the
Group Captain if he's willing to fully co-operate now, and Gilmore
gulps down his pride and asks what to do. The Doctor respons,
"A little bit of piracy."
Ace, Rachel, and Allison come downstairs, Mike waiting for them to be
able to speak to Ace. Ace is very hostile to him, telling him to go
and drown himself. "Mr. Ratcliffe had such great plans," says Mike.
"Ace, I never really wanted to hurt anyone, it's just you have to
protect your own, keep the outsiders out just so your own people can
have a fair chance!" "I said shut up!" yells Ace and she slaps him
on the arm. "I trusted you, I even liked you, and all the time..."
and there Ace chokes on tears and leaves the room in anger. Mike
looks disgusted with himself, and then Gilmore comes down the stairs.
Gilmore orders Mike to attention and then places him under arrest
on suspiciion of offenses contrary to the Official Secrets Act.
The Imperial Dalek assault force moves down the empty London streets.
Their Commander reports back to the mother ship that this are is
clear, but then suddenly, two Renegade Daleks fire on them from down an
alley. Both sides exchange fire, each seeming to have difficulty finding
their targets until the Renegades score some direct hits, destroying at
least two, possibly three of the Imperial squad. The Commander radios
that they are under heavy fire and are retreating.
(the novel explains that both sides were using electronic sensor
jamming in this scene too.)
The mother ship bridge receives the signal, and the crew report the
heavy Renegade resistance to the Emperor. The Emperor Dalek orders
that the Special Weapons Dalek be ordered into position.
The Imperials wheel out the Special Weapons Dalek. One word comes to
mind in describing this sucker: TANK. Its base is the same as a normal
Imperial's except that it seems to have industrial-style stains all
over it. The top section is just one huge energy cannon that can pivot
a full 360 degrees and aim up and down over a certain range of angles too.
The two Renegades that attacked earlier are unlucky enough to move into
this thing's crosshairs, the Special Weapons Dalek opens fire with one
blast, and when the smoke clears, there is NOTHING left of the two
Renegades except a couple of stains on the pavement.
The Imperials move on.
The Doctor has rigged up a lasso, and from the lab window, he snares the
rope on an antenna on top of the Imperial shuttle. They fix the rope's
other end in the room, and the Doctor slides himself down the rope
with his umbrella handle. He breaks inside the Dalek shuttle through an unguarded service hatch on the top. Inside, the Dalek Navigation pilot left
inside is still plugged in to its control position and cannot disengage
without help. It cries out emergency calls and how it will exterminate
the Doctor, until the Doctor fiddles with the interior control circuitry
and shorts out the Dalek. He yells up to the classroom for the others
to come down now.
In the cellar, an RAF corporal holding Mike prisoner ashs Mike if he'd
like some tea. Mike says yes. While the corporal is making it, Mike
gets up behind him and knocks him out.
With Rachel, Allison, Ace, and Gilmore inside the shuttle, the Doctor
finds a Dalek's manipulator arm and plugs it into a control. Flight
co-ordinates appear showing Skaro's position, and the Doctor comments
tat the Daleks are returning to their ancestral seat. He says they've
seen enough and they leave out the normal door, now that he's
deactivated the massive ground defenses.
Mike has managed to sneak past the Dalek lines and get to Ratcliffe's
warehouse, where two Renegades find him and wish to exterminate him.
Mike explains he has a message for Ratcliffe, and they take him
prisoner instead. They escort him inside the control room.
As the Doctor and Company exit the shuttle, the Doctor gets the end of
his umbrella stuck in the door of the shuttle. He says, as he tries
to free it, that he's rigged the communications relay in the shuttle
control systems, and that now they'll be able to monitor them using
the transmat in the cellar. Ace protests that he can't do that since
he smashed it up, and he retorts that he can do anything he'd like
as he yanks out his umbrella.
In the Renegade control center, the Supreme Dalek orders Ratcliffe and
Mike to kneel. The little girl is almost finished repairing the Time
Controller. Ratcliffe tells Mike that without it, the Daleks are
stuck here, and that someone in posession of that would have something to bargain with for anything they demand. Even as he says this, the little girl
turns her head and smiles at them....
As the others go back inside the school, they find the corporal who had
been guarding Mike nursing a sore head. He tells them of Mike's escape.
The Doctor, Ace, Rachel, and Allison go to the cellar to work on the
transmat, whilst Gilmore and the corporal search the building for Mike.
All of the Renegade Daleks have returned to the warehouse and are
congregated in the garage. The Dalek Supreme and the little girl
emerge from the control room. The girl reports that the Time Controller
is repaired and ready, and she places it on the table with the Hand
of Omega casket reporting that departure is imminent. The Supreme
Dalek orders Ratcliffe and Mike to be destroyed, but before they are...
the Special Weapons Dalek unloads on the door to the warehouse, blowing
it completely down, and its Imperial Dalek escorts open fire on the
Renegades. The ones nearest Mike and Ratcliffe are destroyed, and
Ratcliffe yells that now is their chance. Ratcliffe grabs the Time
Controller and he and Mike start up a fire escape. The Supreme Dalek
orders the little girl to recover it. She chases them up a little ways,
then extends her arms and electric fire dances from her fingertips,
playing across Ratcliffe's body, killing him. Mike grabs the Time
Controller and escapes through a door at the top of the steps.
Back in the battle below, energy bolts are everywhere, and the Supreme
Dalek escapes back into the control room, the door sliding shut behind
it. however, such luck is not with the rest of the Renegades, as the
Special Weapons Dalek once again unloads at them, destroying all those
Renegades remaining.
Rachel and Allison heave a television set down the stairs into the cellar,
both wishing that their services were more in the technical area.
Rachel asks why two Dalek factions are fighting each other, and Ace
explains: "Simple isn't it? Renegade Daleks are blobs. Imperial
Daleks are bionic blobs with bits added. And you can tell that Daleks
are into racial purity. Anyhow, the one lot of Daleks reckon that the
other lot of blobs are too different. They're mutants. Not pure in
their blobiness! They hate each other's chromosomes. War to the
death." The Doctor looks up from the electronic mess he's been making
of the transmat, his work finished, and telling Ace that perhaps they
should go see what blobs are winning.
On the mother ship, one of the crew report that the Force Commander has
recovered the Hand of Omega. The Emperor orders all forces to make
immediate withdrawal.
Back at the warehouse, the Imperial Daleks begin moving out, the Special
Weapons Dalek coming last, followed by the Hand of Omega again floating
by itself behind them.
Ace and the Doctor peek out a door down the street in time to see Mike
emerge, holding his pistol out to defend himself and also carrying
the Time Controller. The Doctor remarks how typical this is of a human
to mess things up, and he sends Ace after him to see where he's going.
Mike climbs back down the fire escape, climbing over the dead body
of Ratcliffe.
The Imperial Daleks go back inside their shuttle, the Hand of Omega
obediently following them. The door slides closed again.
The rockets begin to fire, and the shuttle lifts off the ground.
As it soars into the air, the Doctor, standing by the TARDIS, raises
his hat in farewell....
Ace also sees the shuttle flying high above, crying out "Wicked!"
And down another street, the little blonde-haired schoolgirl skips along...
The Doctor returns to the cellar, Rachel, Allison, and Gilmore with
him, Gilmore asking if they're out of the woods now. The Doctor says
yes, as long as everything goes according to his plan.
Rachel asks what plan, and he tells her it's a surprise.
"Good, I love surprises."
"Prepare for shuttle docking!" The shuttle flies inside the Dalek
mother ship and docks. The Emperor orders that the Hand of Omega be
locked into the control circuits. "Omega device locked in and running."
The Doctor connects up a crude camera and the television set to his
transmattmitter, and he calls into it.
"Hello, Dalek mother ship, come in please, come in please."
A picture resolves itself through the static, and the image of the
Emperor Dalek appears. the Doctor speaks:
"Ah, there you are. This is the Doctor. President-elect of the
High Council of Time Lords. Keeper of the Legacy of Rassilon.
Defender of the Laws of Time. Protector of Gallifrey. I call upon
you to surrender the Hand of Omega, and return to your customary
time and place!"
the Emperor responds, its voice normal for a Dalek at first, but
slowly changing to a more humanistic tone as it continues...."
"Ah, Doctor. You have changed again. Your appearance is as
inconstant as your intelligence! You have confounded me for the
last time!!!"
The Emperor Dalek's casing slides open, to reveal a hideous mutant
human head, with an ingrafted blue eye, burnt out normal eye sockets,
withered skin, and wires crossing all over its surface...........
Davros.
"Ah, Davros," says the Doctor. "I should have known. I see you've
discarded the last vestige of your human form. It's still no
improvement."
"Save your insults for the weak-minded Doctor!"
"Are you going to return the Hand of Omega or not?"
"Are you threatening me? If so, it is must unwise!"
"Every time our paths have crossed, I have defeated you."
Ace enters Mike's house hesitantly. She goes slowly into the living
room, and the door closes behind her, to reveal Mike covering her
with his pistol. "Would you really shoot me?" she asks.
"If I had to," he replies. "You might have to."
"Davros, the Hand of Omega is not to be trifled with."
"I think I am quite capable of handling the technology."
"I sincerely doubt that."
"Does it worry you, Doctor, that with it, I will transform Skaro's
Sun into a source of unimaginable power! And with that power, the Daleks,
will SWEEP AWAY Gallifrey, and its impotent quorum of Time Lords!!"
"The Daleks shall become Lords of Time!! WE shall become ALL......"
and the Doctor interrupts..."POWERFUL!"
"CRUSH THE LESSER RACES! CONQUER THE GALAXY! UNIMAGINABLE POWER!
UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING!!!!! EXCETERA!!!!! EXCETERA!!!!!!"
Davros writhes in anger, "Do not anger me Doctor, I can destroy
you! AND THIS MISERABLE INSIGNIFICANT PLANET!!!!"
"Oh wonderful! What power, what brilliance!" says the Doctor
to Rachel, Allison, and Gilmore, and then he returns to Davros, pushing
his face closer and closer to the screen,"You can wipe out the odd
civilization, enslave the occasional culture, but it still won't detract
from the basic fundamental truth, OF YOUR OWN IMPOTENCE!!!!!!"
"Careful Doctor," cautions Rachel. "Dont' worry, I know what
I'm doing," whispers the Doctor to her.
Davros is bubbling and seething nothing but pure rage.
"I shall teach you...THE FOLLY OF YOUR WORDS DOCTOR!
"I will destroy you, AND DEMONSTRATE THE POWER OF THE DALEKS!!!!!"
"Davros," says the Doctro worriedly, "I beg of you, don't use
the Hand!"
"Doctor....Now YOU begin to FEAR!!"
"You're making a grave mistake!"
Davros turns to his crew and gives the order, "ACTIVATE THE OMEGA
DEVICE!!!"
Seen from space, the hand of Omega flies out the underside of the
Dalek mother ship like a white-hot buzz saw.
"Omega device activated!" reports one of the crew.
"Plotting course to home planet Skaro," reports another.
"Now, the Daleks shall become, the Lords of Time!!" smiles Davros.
"Entering Skaro Time Zone!" reports a third Dalek.
A thousand years in the future, the Hand of Omega reaches the
Skaro star system, and hurls itself into the core of its Sun.
"Hot core extraction, primary neutrino release."
"Core collapse instigated" report the crew, then,....
"Danger! Instablility! Reaction OUT OF CONTROL!!"
"No," denies Davros, "This cannot be correct!"
"Home planet Skaro about to vaporize!"
A thousand years in the future, Skaro's star explodes in a fury,
and Skaro is engulfed in the death of its light. The hand of Omega
screams away from its work.... on its way to finish its task.
"You have tricked me!" cries Davros at the Doctor.
"No Davros, you tricked yourself," he replies.
"Omega Device RETURNING!" screams one of the crew.
"Impact minus twenty-five!" screams another.
"did you think I'd let you have control of the Hand of Omega?!?"
questions the Doctor.
"Do not do this, I beg of you!" pleas Davros.
"Nothing can stop it now!"
"have PITY on me!!!"
"I have pity for you," spits the Doctor. "Goodbye, Davros. It hasn't
been pleasant!" and the Doctor cuts off the transmission.
Davros quickly closes his Emperor casing and backs up to the
lift as the crew count-down the time to the hand's impact...
"Emperor abandoning craft!"
"Ten, nine, eight,..."
"Emperor activating escape pod..."
"seven, six, five, four,...
"Escape pod leaving mother ship..."
"three, two, one...."
A small speck, no more than a white dot, flies away from the Dalek
mother ship, as the Hand of Omega buries itself in the center of the
Dalek ship, which explodes.....
The Doctor explains to the others how he programmed the Hand of Omega
to fly into Skaro's sun and turn it super nova. "he blew it up,"
explains Allison to Gilmore. "The explosion destroyed Skaro."
The Doctor flips his hat back on his head. "And the feedback
destroyed the mother ship. The Hand of Omega is now returning to
Gallifrey."
Mike gets Ace to sit down on the couch and is still holding her at
gunpoint when the doorbell rings. Ace tells him to put the gun down,
as its too late for that, and that she doesn't really think he'll
shoot anyone anyway. He orders her to stay where she is, he closes
the living room door behind him as he goes to answer the front door.
Behind the front door.. is that sweet little blonde schoolgirl.
She smiles at Mike, and blasts him with bolts of electricity.
He flies back with enough force to smash up the bannisters on the
stairs behind and he lies dead on the floor. The girl walks in...
RAF trucks close off both ends of an alley, trapping something
inside. The only Dalek remaining, the Renegade Dalek Supreme.
From one truck comes the Doctor, and he advances slowly toward it,
pacing off the ground with his umbrella as he approaches....
Ace backs up against the wall..as the little girl slowly opens the door
and steps into the room. She smiles at Ace.
"Dalek," he says. "It's over. Surrender. You have failed."
It replies that there is insufficient data. The Doctor goes on,
"Your forces are destroyed, your planet a burnt cinder, circling a
dead sun." "There is no data," it responds. It rocks in agitation
as the Doctor continues with his verbal assault...
"Even Davros, your creator, is dead..."
The little girl flings her blue fire at Ace's face, but Ace ducks in time
and the bolts hit a mirror behind where she was, smashing it.
The Doctor continues to taunt the Supreme Dalek. "You have no
superiors, no inferiors, no reinforcements, no hope, no rescue."
"You are lying!" denies the Dalek. "There is insufficient data!"
"You are trapped...a trillion miles, and a thousand years, from a
disintegrated home...."
The Dalek gives over. Its surface glows with a green-yellow energy,
and it begins to spin out of control as it schrieks:
"Out of control! Malfunction!!! Unstable!!!!"
"I have defeated you," says the Doctor. "You no longer serve any
purpose." "CANNOT COMPUTE! UNSTABLE!!!"
In the house, the little girl suddenly stops, and starts screaming
clutching her head, and she spins......
And the Dalek spins.....and it screams, "loss of control!
FUNTCION IMPARED!!! FUNCTION IMPARED!!!!!!!>>>>............"
Steam jets out its side, it glows brighter and brighter, and it spins
into nothing but an energy shadow of its sorry existence.....
The little girl suddenly stops screaming and falls to the floor.
Ace creeps up from behind a couch, and looks at the girl. She is crying.
Ace climbs up from her hiding place, and picks up the child into her
arms and consoles her, the child weeping in Ace's arms.
"It's alright..don't worry...it's all over now."
While in the next room, Mike's dead eyes stare into nowhere.........
The Doctor probes an ash-pile where the Supreme Renegade Dalek once
stood, where it died, with the end of his umbrella. He traces out a
pattern in the ash, a sign of the Cross, and remembers..."
"Ashes to Ashes...Dust to Dust."
he picks up the umbrella, blows the dust quickly off the end, turns on
his heels and leaves the new grave site...
Sunday morning, and a church bell rings out, a church by a graveyard.
A funeral procession glides inside, pallbearers carrying a wooden casket
inside the church, relatives, Mike's mother, Group Captain Gilmore,
Rachel Jensen, and Allison Williams all glide inside the church. We
cannot see their legs, their motion thus reminding us of the Daleks.
Two people at the end of the procession do not go inside. Ace and the
Doctor. The Doctor puts a restraining hand on Ace's arm; they will not
attend Mike's funeral.
"Time to leave," says the Doctor.
"yes," says Ace, her eyes wells of unspilt tears, her cheeks red with
anger, loss, grief, exhaustion, and sadness.
She asks her Professor, "Doctor?"
"Yes," he answers. "We did good didn't we?" she pleas, hoping for a
definite answer, a way of knowing that all the deaths were not for
nothing....
The Doctor responds, "Perhaps." he too glances with sadness inside
the still-open church door and finishes his answer with the ancient
response, the only response, that he can ever give:
"Time will tell. It always does."
The two turn and walk away, back to their TARDIS, leaving the church behind.
A funeral usher closes the door.
